Super soft, scratch-free & silky shiny
Alpaca wool is one of the most luxurious and simultaneously sustainable natural fibers in the world. It belongs to the finest natural fiber qualities (alongside mohair, cashmere, merino) and is very easy to knit. The yarn from alpacas, made of alpaca fibres, is significantly more tear-resistant than sheep wool, making it very durable and long-lasting.
Alpaca wool is free from lanolin (wool grease) and ideal for sensitive or hypoallergenic skin types. For the production of our APU KUNTUR yarns, we use the finest fiber qualities.

Frequently Asked Questions
about alpaca yarns
Yes, of course! The uncolored yarns can be found HERE. These natural tones are completely uncolored, free from any dyes, and certified OEKO-Tex Class 1.
Because alpaca fibre naturally comes in a wide color palette – from ecru to beige and brown, to gray and even black tones.
To determine the fineness of the fiber or wool of an alpaca, the diameter of the animal's hair is always measured. The finer the individual hair, the higher the quality of the clothing and the softer it feels. There are different fineness classes for alpaca. We use only fibers from the finest alpaca natural hair classes for our designs and clothing: Baby Alpaca and Superfine Alpaca.
The fineness of alpaca fibers from Peru is measured in "microns" or micrometers. We exclusively process hair from alpacas with a fineness of 19 to 27 micrometers for our wool qualities, which corresponds to a fineness of 0.019 to 0.027 millimeters. One of the many advantages of alpaca fiber lies in this beautiful fineness.
For comparison
Human hair has a thickness of 70 micrometers. Significantly higher than sheep wool, which is measured at about 30 or 40 microns for the finest fibers. Our offered quality (in microns) at a glance:
- Quality Royal Alpaca: 19.5 microns
- Quality Baby Alpaca: 22.5 microns
- Quality Vicuna: 10 – 13 microns

We recommend washing the clothing or garments by hand to ensure long-lasting enjoyment. Ideally, wash the item in cold water with a gentle wool detergent. Always dry it lying flat afterwards to avoid deformation.
Alpaca wool is naturally hypoallergenic and self-cleaning, so regular washing is not necessary. Simply hang it up to air out, and odors and wrinkles will disappear on their own.
Our alpaca wool comes from the high mountains of Peru. Our alpacas mostly live in small family herds of 50 to 100 animals in the Peruvian Andes. There are thousands of small farmers who rely on alpaca breeding, caring for their animals with great attention and keeping them outdoors year-round.
The shearing traditionally takes place once a year in Peru per animal and lasts only a few minutes. Afterwards, the fibers are manually sorted by color and fineness. This traditional selection is a demanding craft that only a few people master. Our alpaca wool is further processed in our own production facilities in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima in Peru. Here, we guarantee fair wages, secure jobs, and above-average social benefits.
The finest fibers are then classified into fineness categories, with each hair fiber assigned to a specific fineness class. We only use fibers from the fineness grades Baby Alpaca and Superfine Alpaca, both of which are particularly soft and lightweight. The small merino content in our sock wool comes from sheep in Uruguay that are sheared without mulesing.
Alpaca wool is a wonderful material for all clothing items where you can feel the soft sensation of comfort on your skin. Customers love to knit socks, scarves, hats, sweaters, and other cozy design classics from our alpaca wool.
Sweaters and baby and children's clothing made from alpaca wool are very popular because they are OEKO TEX Class 1 certified and free from dyes.
Due to the durability of the alpaca fiber, you can wear your knitted designs for a very long time.
This varies greatly and depends heavily on which piece of clothing is to be knitted.
Knitting Socks

Baby alpaca wool does not come, as the name might suggest, from baby alpacas, but is a fineness grade for the finest alpaca fibers. Baby alpaca yarn is one of the most unique knitting yarns in the world because it is extremely lightweight, soft, and elastic.
The luxurious properties of baby alpaca wool and its sustainable sourcing, as well as the warmth it provides, make it particularly sought after for the production of winter clothing and cardigans.
For almost all knitted items and designs, we recommend the 100% Baby Alpaca wool from APU KUNTUR. Thanks to the pure Baby Alpaca quality, the excellent wearing properties of the fiber are showcased here: it is particularly fine & soft, thermoregulating, and odor-neutral. Additionally, due to its fineness, it is especially lightweight and evenly knit.
For socks and accessories in beautiful patterns, the special Alpaca sock yarn from APU KUNTUR is the best choice. This specially formulated blend of Alpaca and Superwash wool provides wonderful softness, and the small amount of polyamide ensures long-lasting stability. Furthermore, the Alpaca sock yarn is machine washable on a gentle cycle and remains soft and shape-retaining even after washing.
The finest fibers come from vicuñas, which are hardly larger than an average deer. Vicuñas are small wild camels found in the Andes. They live only at altitudes between 3700 and 5000 meters, which gives their wool an incredible fineness of 13-15 microns. No animal fiber has fewer microns. A single adult animal can produce up to 120 grams of wool, making it one of the most expensive materials available.
Vicuña wool is the most expensive and exquisite fiber in the world. In our online shop, you will find an exclusive Luxury Vicuña collection. This Luxury collection consists of a cape, scarf, coat, and poncho. Discover our Luxury collection now.
Our alpaca range is particularly recommended for allergy sufferers. Lanolin is an animal fat found in sheep wool and can be irritating to the skin. Since alpaca wool is almost completely lanolin-free, it is perfectly suitable for allergy sufferers, babies, and toddlers, as well as generally for people with sensitive skin.
Our alpaca sweaters, cardigans, scarves, hats, gloves, and even thermal underwear can be worn without any concerns.
Alpaca is a popular natural fiber for the production of all textiles that are said to have unique thermal properties and can be worn year-round. Its soft, snug texture protects against cold and wind, making it ideal clothing for the autumn and winter seasons.
At the same time, alpaca is thermoregulating due to the tiny hollow spaces within the fiber. These act like an air conditioner and cool in the summer, allowing alpaca to be wonderfully worn throughout the year.
The natural hair of the alpaca is valued for its soft and luxurious feel, but also for its uniquely elegant shine.
This is created partly by the fine surface structure of the alpaca's hair and due to its special composition and protein structure - a valuable property that is preserved through gentle further processing.
We use refined Merino wool as an additional component of our sock yarn qualities, so that they can be machine washed. The Merino content of our sock wool comes from sheep in Uruguay, which are sheared gently and guaranteed to be mulesing-free.
The Merino sheep is a fine-wool breed, whose name traces back to the Berber dynasty of the Merinids. Merino wool is not quite as fine as alpaca, but has similarly good thermal properties for a pleasant, soft wearing experience in both cold and heat.
The Merino wool in our alpaca sock wool is of the best Superwash quality. Superwash is a polymer refinement that makes the fibers in the yarn even smoother. As a result, your knitted items are free from pilling (pilling refers to the formation of those small wool balls) and easier to wash, even in the machine.
